Venue: Seminal Hall
Resource Person: Ridhi Sachdeva
Participants: Students
Faculty Coordinator: Ms. Rutambara Dhotre
Organizer: Psychology Department
Objectives:
To guide students through an experiential journey using expressive art therapy to explore and identify personal boundaries, foster emotional awareness, and promote peer empathy through creative expression and shared reflection
Session Overview
The session began with a warm introduction to the principles of expressive art therapy, emphasizing its role in emotional healing, self-discovery, and interpersonal understanding. Students were encouraged to engage with the process without judgment or artistic expectations.
Activity 1: Drawing Boundaries
Students were invited to create visual representations of their personal boundaries using drawing materials. The prompt encouraged introspection:
“Draw what your boundaries feel like—not what they look like. Let your emotions guide your lines, shapes, and colours.”
Themes that emerged included:
- Circles and enclosed spaces representing emotional safety
- Jagged edges and fragmented forms symbolizing past trauma or unresolved conflict
- Bridges and open doors indicating a desire for connection with limits
Activity 2: Quote Sharing
After completing their artwork, each student wrote a reflective quote based on their drawing. These quotes were passed anonymously to the next participant, creating a ripple of shared insight and emotional resonance.
Examples of student quotes:
1. “My boundaries are not walls—they are windows with curtains I choose to open.”
2. “I drew silence, because sometimes my boundary is not speaking when I need space.”
3. “The red line is where I stop giving more than I have.”
4. “This spiral is my mind when I let others in too fast.”
5. “I learned that my boundary is not rejection—it’s self-respect.”
Outcomes & Reflections
1. Self-awareness: Students gained clarity on their emotional limits and how they manifest in relationships.
2. Empathy: Reading others’ quotes fostered a sense of shared experience and mutual understanding.
3. Creative empowerment: The non-verbal nature of the exercise allowed students to express complex emotions safely.
4. Community connection: The quote-passing ritual created a quiet but powerful bond among participants.
This session on expressive art therapy served as a transformative space for emotional exploration and interpersonal growth. Through the act of drawing boundaries and anonymously sharing reflective quotes, students were able to articulate and witness the nuanced layers of their inner worlds. The creative process not only fostered self-awareness and empathy but also cultivated a sense of community rooted in vulnerability and respect. By removing the pressure of artistic perfection and focusing instead on emotional authenticity, participants experienced the healing potential of art as a medium for connection and self-discovery. This session stands as a testament to the power of expression in nurturing resilience, understanding, and emotional clarity.
