The Age of Unlearning: When Machines Think for Us

As humanity continues to march boldly into the age of artificial intelligence, an unsettling thought lingers at the edge of progress: what if, in our race to enhance life, we begin to lose what made us human in the first place?

We often hear that evolution has already begun trimming away what we no longer use the appendix, the tailbone, even the last vertebra, which some scientists suggest may eventually vanish as modern lifestyles eliminate the need for certain physical functions. But what happens when evolution targets not just the body, but the mind?

This is the fear that haunts me. Not the rise of machine learning itself for that is merely a tool, a remarkable creation of human intellect. My concern lies with what humans may gradually unlearn. As we delegate more and more cognitive tasks to machines from remembering phone numbers to making decisions, even forming opinions we risk atrophying the very faculties that define our intelligence and independence.

There is a quiet, creeping danger in becoming too comfortable with outsourcing our mental labour. If artificial intelligence begins to drive our thoughts, filter our choices, and automate our creativity, will the human brain evolve to adapt or diminish? Will we one day look back and realize we have handed over not just our work, but our will?

This isn't a call to reject technology, but a reminder to preserve the muscle of the mind. Let machines assist, not replace. Let AI support, not supplant. Because the greatest disruption would not be the rise of machines it would be the fall of human thought.
